Abstract
The Nature and Effects of Cooperation among Central Banks in International Economic Law
By
Omid Fateh
Since the start of sixteenth century, central banks have experienced a lot of ups and downs in their functions. Their roles have evolved from strict governmental dependence on central banks for waging wars and being based on the gold standard in their fiscal transactions to issues such as the need for central banking independence and different functions like formulating the monetary and financial policies. In spite of its appearance, the cooperation between the central banks is a relatively old concept in the international economic law. In the current thesis, there have been some questions raised for author. How the cooperation between central banks is achieved in international economic relations? What are the mechanisms governing the central banking cooperation in international community? The results of this study are as follow: the current cooperation systems between central banks can be divided mainly in two distinct international systems. One of them is regional and the other one is global. The first regional central banking cooperation system is European Central Bank that is just accepted for EU membership and the countries which opted the Euro as their single currency. The second global central banking cooperation is the Bank of International Settlements. However, the central banking cooperation is now a matter of concern for the world in its entirety. Finally, these concerns have raised joint issues such as the international financial architecture modification, the need for international financial crisis prevention and facilitating the international financial relations.
